Stephan Ginez & Alex Guerra
2016 Community Builder of the Year Award Recipients
In two short years, Hôtel Gaythering and their committed team—led by partners Stephan Ginez and Alex Guerra— have created an exceptional gathering place for the LGBT community. They’ve opened up their hotel to many different nonprofits to meet and gather completely free of charge, from new organizations in need of meeting space, to elder support groups, to volunteers canvassing for pro-LGBT candidates, to yoga, meditation, and HIV support groups.
In the wake of the Orlando shooting that killed nearly 50 LGBT people and allies in Orlando nightclub Pulse and devastated the LGBT and Latino/a communities, Hôtel Gaythering immediately reached out to OUT Miami Foundation to host a fundraiser for the victims and their families. Together, we turned our charity Gay Bingo event (co-hosted each month by OUT Miami Foundation and Hotel Gaythering) into a fundraiser for the victims of the Pulse shooting which raised over $10,000 in a single night— thanks to the Hotel Gaythering matching every single dollar raised at the fundraiser.
Most recently, they began the process of redesigning one of their hotel rooms to become a temporary emergency shelter for LGBT homeless youth. Alex and Stephan are proactive in reaching out to local LGBT nonprofits to offer their support, resources, and advice. They genuinely care about our community and creating authentic opportunities for LGBT people to be themselves, with a demonstrated focus on building community rather than the bottom line. For the reasons above, the OUT Miami Foundation is proud to honor Stephan, Alex, and the Hôtel Gaythering as the 2016 OUT Miami Foundation Community Builder of the Year recipients.
